  • Coming out of South Florida, my practice is heavily informed by a unique blend of Southern Afro-American and Caribbean sensibilities, regional ways of dress, open ended self-expression and finding music worth listening to. The close proximity to Miami left an impact of dynamism on the whole tri-county area, which afforded me the ability to frequently attend underground shows, questionably-legal pop ups, famous fairs and events or spend long nights out exploring the outskirts of town with friends. This put me in a position where l often found myself both thinking about the nature of my community, how it was changing, its hardships, and how we were all trying to fit into an ideal. Even when our lifestyles contradicted an ideal, with the introduction of virality these contested images, ideas and values once hidden from the circuit of culture were now at the forefront of it and being consumed at an ever-increasing rate.

Having begun my artistic practice as a way to find place in this new system, I was immediately drawn towards the usage of photography and video for their ability to quantify this hidden language. At first, this involved orienting myself toward the surrounding artists and stuntmen performing at the events I was attending, sequencing images and clips together to form documentary style vignettes of a gritty underground scene at the site of a rapid explosion. Though it has gradually evolved into a much more methodical process based in research, real-world examples and meticulously constructed scenes, actions and scenarios from which I charge myself up to work.

This reasoning guides the meaning of my art. As I aim to reveal the behind-the-curtain forces that shape culture and community by offering viewers new ways to recognize the patterns, contradictions, and rituals that structure them. I like to view myself as an ambassador, with my work as proof of both a quick intuition and an informed baseline. Ultimately, I hope my work provokes a dialogue in which viewers can both recognize my experiences while also reconsidering the cultural forces and patterns that have shaped their own.
